Employees Will Test
What is it the employees want to know? Why do they keep wanting to know it? Like any person a group of employees want to know where their place is in the scheme of things. They wish to know the job and how what each does affects the whole. They also wish to know they are doing it correctly and that the boss is pleased. Let's face it, every day they come in and basically do the same job so they need to get cues that it still is being done well.
Employees wish to know that the boss is going to be consistent. Not only this but that fairness matters. And they want to know that they have a relationship with the person in charge. This is shown by the hellos and asking how things are going and even some jokes now and then. They want to feel like a boss sees then not only as an employee but also as a person.
But the greatest thing employees want to know and why they test is, they want to know where the boundaries are. This is why managers have to be consistent with the rules and also communicate the rules very clearly. The employees need to know the boundaries because this give the employees or team security. If someone does not know where the lines are they may make a mistake and cross the lines without even knowing they got close. That's the fear for an employee. To not be able to recognize the line. They also test to see if they can trust the boss.
One of the greatest things you can do for employees is be concise or expectations. Don't ever assume that they know what you want. Tell them.

Should Employees Have a Say
Many decisions are made in any business day to day. As for the decisions of new clients or expansion it is the executives of a business that make these decisions and certainly they have the information to do so. But in the every day workings of the organization there are hundreds of decisions going on every day. In any job an employee may have it will be the procedure to ask a manager when a problem arises or for the employee to take care of the problem. This will come down to how well the employee is trained and how much trust management has in the employee. There is no problem with the employee reporting back the events of the day but having the employee make decisions usually takes care of the customer faster.
When a decision has to be made about changing a procedure in the department or maybe it does affect the entire business it is often beneficial to get ideas or feedback from the employees. This can be done in a meeting or by a survey. The employees are the ones doing the jobs and can often see that a problem may occur or suggest a slightly different way for the procedure or implementation of the procedure. This also empowers the employees and let's them know they are valued. Instead of everything just being handed down, it lets them know they are part of the process.
Though I would not suggest this for every decision the ones that directly and immediately affect the employees might be the ones that involve them a little. It should be the goal of any business to make employees feel a part of the business and that they matter.

Respecting Employees
The front line employee is the one that does the work. The front line employee knows the job especially if it has been done for any length of time. This employee knows the rules and the boundaries that have been set up. And what becomes very helpful is this employee knows the other departments, knows where to find equipment, knows what is broken, what is not working well, and has made the relationships with others to get the work done. What an incredible resource.
Often though employees are not asked their opinions of what might work better or how a system could be smoother. Yet also often they can have incredible ideas. These can be talked about in a meeting or a survey can be given to them. Another way is to have a pilot program where the employees test equipment that may be purchased in the future and turn in their opinions of how it works. Ask them if it makes the job easier or not. But even go further ask them to explain why it would be good or why it does not work. This get their expertise of trying something out and gets them involved. They also now see their opinion is respected.
Ask them what problems they had during the day and what was done to solve these. Let them explain a couple of different things that occurred and how they handled them. This is a time to listen and maybe make suggestions but it's very important to have them feel good that the work was handled. Praise them for their corrections. Give praise. This shows respect.
Smile and say hello, ask how they are doing. because you respect the job they do for you.

There Will Be Another Goal
Goals are necessary for anyone needing to get a job done. We set them all the time even when simply doing chores or planning a vacation. Many times goals are set by bosses for things they need to have done. Often people put the goal in their mind and then go about the day. However this can often lead to small and sometimes big things missed. There are many distractions during any given day which can have the goal be put aside.
One of the things that must be remembered is that until a goal is written down it is simply a thought. The brain is like a computer, and must be given a directive. If not an idea or thought about something simply bounces around for the most part. A goal needs to be specific on the target that is wanted. This allows the brain to focus.
Next the obstacles in the way should also be written down. Every obstacle that can be thought about. This computer of ours wants to solve problems. This simply could be communicating to the team. Though it doesn't look like an obstacle if they don' know what is wanted it quickly becomes one.
Finally the action items should be written down on what it will take to get all those obstacles out of the way. Doing this is moving towards the goals being completed and will achieve them every time. What has been done here is to define the destination, figure out what is in the way, and then take action to achieve. But it has been done in a focused way with a way to check progress.
